“There’s a Japanese phrase that I like: koi no yokan. It doesn’t mean love at first sight. It’s closer to love at second sight.”
Nicola Yoon's, The Sun Is Also a Star traces the story of Natasha, a Jamaican immigrant who has twelve hours before she is deported. While Daniel, a Korean American, good son accepting his parent's wish to become a doctor going for a Yale interview. Fate brings them together when Daniel saves Natasha from an accident. They spend time together where Daniel learns Natasha is a science geek who believes in facts, while he is a hopeless romantic, poet, and a believer of fate and destiny. Natasha, who doesn't believe in love is persuaded by Daniel, who thinks he can make her fall in love scientifically. Natasha despite being leaving American soon try to forestall Daniel but end up falling in love. But fate has something else in store for them.
The story is narrated through the viewpoint of Natasha and Daniel and takes place in a span of one day. There are additional characters' stories narrated literally by the universe. The short chapters cover the simple yet complicated life of both Daniel and Natasha. The background characters add meaning to the story making it more interesting.
Nicola Yoon did a phenomenal job by bringing to light some serious topics through this novel. Like the law for immigrants, how Asian people have hair salons in America along with how racist society can be. The fact that two communities can be connected through love. Also, some discussion between Daniel and Natasha caught my eye be it about fate, destiny, or the multiverse, how everything is connected and depends on that one decision. The innocent love story did have a satisfying rather realistic ending. The magical writing of the author made me fall in love with this book.
Disclaimer: Read the book before watching the movie, saying this because I did the opposite and regret it.
My Rating: 5/5
