Have you ever made a Wish list?
Life is short, and the human heart desires unlimited things. When we penned down the desires so we could complete them throughout our life, that ultimately becomes our wish list.
The Secret Wish List by Preeti Shenoy consists of an extraordinary story of Diksha, who at the age of sixteen is a passionate, ambitious, and positive girl. When she is with her best friend Tanu the world disappears as they are bound to each other. Diksha had a normal life until Ankit entered in, and it changed forever. Ankit is Diksha’s senior and also her brother’s friend. They both fall in love and embrace the feeling while Diksha does things she never imagined. They both are caught in the chain of events where an innocent mistake changes the course of Diksha’s life. Guilt took over her and her parent's force, she agreed to marry Sandeep in the hope to pleased her parents. Married for fifteen years to Sandeep and raising Abhay, their 9-year-old son, Diksha get used to her unappreciated life. Attending to Sandeep is what seems to be her daily routine. But one day, when Vibha makes her realize what she has missed in years and how she could step outside and do something which matters. This gives birth to a secret wish list in which Diksha pours out her heart. When the things in the list are executed, her life again turns upside down, when her past returns which she was unable to forget all these years. Diksha’s life hangs in her hands when she has to decide for her future, which could cost her the happiness and love she always wanted.
The book is full of turns and unexpected happenings, which is well balanced with the narration that hooks the readers. It is a story about friendship, love, family but above all, how to overcome fears and speak up for our needs. The decision, Diksha made would be considered erroneous, but that was the time she stands for her sake after going through so many past years. The way only her mother-in-law supported her and stand by her throughout was a definition of a great relationship.
The book through Diksha’s journey embeds a strong message that finding our true self is important. Diksha’s path goes through sacrifice and betrayal but that too happens because her choice was never considered in the past. The story highlights that mistakes are made by every child but parents must listen to each side and understand rather than make harsh choices.
The thing that I liked about the book and had an impact on was that every relationship requires even effort. The responsibility is never of a single person. Another thing was how parents must understand their children. The main was standing up for ourselves and having a voice of our own. "You are your greater friend and your greatest enemy" this proverb suits the condition.
The language of the book is simple to interpret. The narration work is appreciable. But the story could have been better. Since it might not be liked by many who are not interested in this kind of genre.
