“You can’t tell whether people are gay by what they look like. And gay or straight aren’t the only options.”
Heartstopper by Alice Oseman traces the story of Charlie and Nick, who are in the same school haven't met until one day they are made to sit together. Boy meets Boy moment. Charlie Spring, an outed gay who was bullied last year for the same is a simple guy whereas Nick is the perfect guy who is on a ruby team. Soon they become friends. But Charlie starts falling for Nick, who is definitely straight. Their friendship blossoms and they become best friends when Charlie joins the ruby team. Nick and Charlie start spending time together. To surprise, Nick is more into Charlie than any of them realized. Will Nick accept his feelings for Charlie? Will love work in a surprising way for Charlie?
This was my first graphic novel and I must say it was beautiful in all ways. The illustrations were so cute. Nick and Charlie are like the cutest couple. The perfect blend of love, friendship, and mental illness in the story makes it a short and sweet read. The first book ends abruptly and this increases the hype to read the second volume. The first book is optioned for television and soon it will be up on Netflix. I just can't wait for that. Also, the hype of the book is totally worth it.
My Rating: 5/5
