Durjoy Dutta never misses any chance to strike the reader's heart. 'Till The Last Breath' is a tale of Love, Friendship, and Life. The story revolves around two patients who are admitted to GKL hospital's room no 509. Dushyant and engineering student suffering from liver damage due to his addiction to all toxic things and Pihu, an ambitious medical student who is diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) a disease which is eating her life slowly. The two doctors treating them, Arman Kashyap a rare genius with charming looks has taken over Phiu's case while Zarah Miraz, an intern has Dushyant's case. Pihu and Dushyant become roommates where, despite him being rude, she tries to become his friend. Zarah hates to be surrounded by men due to her dark past is somewhere drawn towards Dushyant, but when Kajal his ex-girlfriend enters the hospital Zarah steps back. The doctors fighting their demons try to save the life of their patients. As time passes Arman and Pihu fall for each other while Zarah fights with her feelings for Dushyant. Their life takes a turn when the condition of Pihu and Dushyant deteriorate. The doctors are forced to risk their medical licenses to keep their patients alive.
The narration of the story is unique. Each chapter is named by the characters, their perspective is narrated.Which is a difficult task to do so kudos to the author. Talking about characters. Firstly Pihu was my favorite. She was a bubbly person. The way she handled the situation of being sick and was always the positive lamp. She supported Dushyant and cared for him. The love she carried for Arman was her thing to hold tight on life. Dushyant was a natural character. He was careless, arrogant, and worst of all, but by the end, he made his amends with Pihu and cared for her. He even liked Zarah and regretted the way he treated Kajal. Zarah was a complex character at the start of the story, but her past story was horrific and the pain was felt. Arman was a fine character, he was a genius but he truly loved Pihu and was putting everything at risk for her. Kajal was the character whose story was a bit incomplete, but the way she loved Dushyant after going through hell was what defines their relationship.
Coming back to the story, the characters were well placed, and their back story backed their behavior. The things going on in one place that is the hospital, and viewed from each person's perspective made it interesting. The ending was devastating and manage to bring tears. The book is a bit steady at the beginning but as the pages flip it sure gets intense.
The story would strike a chord in your heart while emphasizing the lesson of life. It will imbue us with the thought that how staying alive is a difficult task and how it is neglected. The story focuses on concepts that are always ignored. There is more to life than just burying it in work or past addiction or shutting yourself out. Communication is the path of healing and moving closer toward life.
